Animals Currently Available for Adoption

Horses and other animals in need are currently in the care of SHARE volunteers, waiting for a good home. If you are interested in adopting an animal from SHARE, you can see some of the current cases here. Please review our Adoption Requirements before submitting the Adoption Application.

Certain horses on this list are considered sanctuary horses. These animals have special needs that are unusually significant or difficult to manage. Unfortunately, we feel it is unlikely they will ever be adopted and so we have labelled them as such. However, we welcome sponsorships for these horses, or if you think you could provide for them as a lifetime adoptor or foster home, please contact us to discuss the situation.

The Starved Horse

My heart hurts because I am not loved.
I wish I could fly away just like a dove.
My tail no longer swishes back and forth.
I have lost everything that I was worth.
I am too skinny and too weak to care.
Something that no-one should ever have to bear.
Maybe I will get fed today.
Why am I teasing myself this way?
I know I will not get food or water.
To my owner I am just a bother.
They might love me I try to think.
Nicer thoughts I try to seek.
Today I will lay down in the mud.
Fall asleep and never wake up.

Don't forget to take a look at our 2011 Nurse Mare foals. They will be available for adoption when they are six months old--between July and November 2011.

Roster of Available Animals:

Name:
Ace
Age:
Yearling (2011 foal)
Gender:
Colt/Gelding
Species:
Horse
Breed:
Appaloosa
Location:
SHARE
Ace's Story:
Ace is an appaloosa colt born with relaxed pasterns. As is usual, with a little farrier attention and turn-out time he outgrew that issue. He may have to have special shoes as an adult riding horse and will also probably develop more color and appaloosa markings as he ages. He is pleasure-halter bred and has a beautiful little face, good manners, and a very sweet, lovey personality.

You can keep track of new photos, videos, and other progress on his updates page.

Ace's adoption fee is $500. FEBRUARY SPECIAL! The adoption fee has been reduced to $400!

Name:
Black Jack
Age:
4 (2008 birthdate)
Gender:
Gelding
Species:
Horse
Breed:
Pony
Location:
S.H.A.R.E.
Black Jack's Story:
Black Jack is a three year old pony gelding. He stands 41 inches tall. Since his arrival at S.H.A.R.E. he has gained some much needed weight, has become more comfortable around people and has been gelded. He is now up for adoption and ready to find his forever home.

Blackjack has extremely cute movement and would make a great cart pony. Right now he is a little timid but he is young and would come along very well with regular work.

Videos of Blackjack's super cute movement: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXn3wCizNw0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IdVcZwTpjUU\

Blackjack's adoption fee is $350. FEBRUARY SPECIAL! The adoption fee has been reduced to $250!

Name:
Blossom and Smokey
Age:
31 and 32
Gender:
Mare & Gelding
Species:
Horse
Breed:
Quarter Horse
Location:
Share - Sanctuary horses
Blossom and Smokey's Story:
Blossom and Smokey are SHARE's great love story... wait, that's not right, they are siblings... Well, anyway.

Blossom is the bay horse (in front), and she's blind. Smokey is her brother, and her guide horse. They are 30 and 31 years old (in 2011), and are always together, because Blossom depends on Smokey to guide her, and he understands she's blind and needs extra help. They are very special horses who are "sanctuary horses" at SHARE--they are not available for adoption due to their special needs, and we will provide a loving home for them until they are no longer comfortable. Smokey and Blossom are very friendly horses and love being groomed.

Despite their advanced age, they are in gorgeous condition and like several other oldies at SHARE, are proof that old age shouldn't automatically mean poor condition.

Name:
Bo
Age:
8 (2004)
Gender:
Gelding
Species:
Horse
Breed:
Appaloosa
Location:
S.H.A.R.E.
Bo's Story:
Ultimate Executivebo, a.k.a. "Bo" is a 2004 registered appaloosa. He's a classically marked bright sorrel with a blanket with spots over his hips and back. He was one of the Toledo Ten and came to us severely underweight. (The current photo is after about 2 weeks of a foster home, in early November.) He is an own son of The Ultimate Skip and looks much like him save for about a several hundred pound weight difference, unfortunately. Our humane investigator fell in love with this horse's sweet personality, despite his situation. So far, he has been very easy to handle and is just an all-around good boy. Throughout this entire process he has been a great guy who really doesn't get too worried about anything. We gelded him in January and are waiting for him to recover further before trying to find out whether he is broke to ride. Even if he's not, he's so easy going we suspect it won't take much to get him started. Please get your adoption application in for this special and beautiful boy.

You can keep track of new photos, videos, and other progress on his updates page.

Bo's adoption fee is $500. FEBRUARY SPECIAL! The adoption fee has been reduced to $400!

Name:
Buckshot
Age:
6 (2006 birthdate)
Gender:
Gelding
Species:
Horse
Breed:
Appaloosa
Location:
At his owners--near SHARE
Buckshot's Story:
ADOPTION PENDING!!! Buckshot is around 6 years old, and was adopted from us about 4 years ago but the owners can no longer keep him. They have trail ridden him all over and he is a very good boy. He is nice and stout and loves attention. During this photo shoot we just pulled him out of the pasture and jumped on him. There was no working him beforehand. It has been about a year since he was last ridden but he did nothing wrong. He was a tad on the lazier side but that other then that he was fine. He will need someone to just tune him up and get him in shape but it won't take much work. His previous owner reports that he is wonderful on the trails and crosses water without a problem. Buckshot is looking for his forever home!

Name:
Buddy
Age:
3-4 years old (Estimated 2008 or 2009 birthdate)
Gender:
Male
Species:
Horse
Breed:
Quarter Horse (not registered)
Location:
S.H.A.R.E.
Buddy's Story:
Buddy is another sweet gelding from the Toledo Ten rescue. Buddy is very sweet and seems pretty gentle. He’s a sweet boy who loves attention and affection from people. He’s probably just a few years old and we are pretty sure he has had no training under saddle because of his young age. Like all the others from the Toledo rescue, he was not gelded but we have gelded him as of January. He's good friends with Bo as they have been together since the rescue, but they don't need to be adopted together. He gets along well in a groups, too.

Whether you are interested in fostering or adopting, please submit an application! You can keep track of new photos, videos, and other progress on his updates page.

Buddy's adoption fee is $500. FEBRUARY SPECIAL! The adoption fee has been reduced to $400!

Name:
Chief
Age:
8-9 (Born 2003 or 2004)
Gender:
Gelding
Species:
Horse
Breed:
Paint
Location:
SHARE
Chief's Story:
Chief is a nice and sweet paint gelding. He has lameness issues that require special shoes to be a riding horse, however, as a pasture pet, he does not need special treatment other than regular trims from the farrier. At our recent open house he spent all 5 hours with his head sticking out of her stall waiting for people to come pet him. Friendly and people-loving is an understatement!

Chief's adoption fee is $400. FEBRUARY SPECIAL! The adoption fee has been reduced to $300!

Name:
Copper
Age:
14 (born 1998)
Gender:
Mare
Species:
Horse
Breed:
Missouri Foxtrotter
Location:

Copper's Story:
Copper has some arthritis issues so she really needs good space where she can run. We are suggesting a 3+ acre pasture assuming there aren't many other horses--more acres if she's going to be in with too many others. She is good friends with Shygirl but they don't need to be adopted together.

Copper's adoption fee is $400. FEBRUARY SPECIAL! The adoption fee has been reduced to $300!

Name:
Crystal
Age:
9-10 (2003-2004 birthdate)
Gender:
Mare
Species:
Horse
Breed:
Caspian Horse
Location:
Share - Sanctuary horse
Crystal's Story:
Crystal came in with 3 other Caspian horses when her breeder lost her home. Crystal suffers from some dental problems as well as an undetermined autoimmune disorder (possibly from ingesting something poisonous at some point) and came in in pitiful condition. Initially the vet checked her every few weeks to draw blood for a blood test and give her a steroid shot. Luckily, she's not needed a steroid shot after a few months, so she has reached some improvement. Because her teeth are in really bad shape for her age and we don't know when she might have more medical issues related to her autoimmune issue, we're considering her a sanctuary horse so she will stay at SHARE for as long as she can be kept comfortable.

We are looking for a sponsor to help out with Crystal's medical expenses. It is possible that she might be available for adoption to a very special home--Crystal must be closely monitored, currently sees the vet monthly, and will continue to have significantly higher medical costs in the future. Adopting Crystal is a significant commitment and isn't for everyone.

This photo was taken about 5 months after Crystal's arrival and she looks 100% better!

More pictures of Crystal are available on her updates page.

Name:
Daka
Age:
12 (approx 2000 birthdate)
Gender:
Mare
Species:
Daka
Breed:
Trakehner-Arab
Location:
SHARE
Daka's Story:
Daka is an 11-year-old Trakehner-Arabian former broodmare. She is the dam of the graying out yearling we just placed. She is about 15.2 hands high and a really beautiful mover. (Trotting in hand video: http://youtu.be/q3TImiD1QGc) She is blind in her right eye but there's only a smidge of cloudiness and it doesn't seem to bother her at all, nor do we feel it will cause any difficulties in a future show career as she's very well-adjusted and trusting. She is pretty easy to handle but we are told has not been broke to ride, however she is very used to people and being handled so it shouldn't be difficult, and we'd like to get her a home as a show or riding horse rather than just being a broodmare. She is a little underweight right now but in otherwise good health and ready to meet potential adopters.

See more pictures including some video and in-motion shots of Daka on her updates page.

Daka's adoption fee is $800. FEBRUARY SPECIAL! The adoption fee has been reduced to $700!

Name:
Dapple
Age:
11 years
Gender:
Gelding
Species:
Horse
Breed:
Shetland
Location:
In Foster
Dapple's Story:
Dapple is one of the horses that came in with the Toledo Ten. He is a cute little pony that wants to be loved. He is a beautiful Chocolate Palomino color. He does need some work yet as he was significantly underweight when he came in. Because of the amount of burrs in his mane and forelock, he had an injury to one eye. We have been working with our vet to help him but we are not sure if he will regain sight in that eye. It does not seem to bother him and he gets along just fine. He is currently at a foster home where he is spending time living with some sheep and being pampered by his foster mom. He will be ready for his forever home in February 2012.

Dapple's adoption fee is $350. FEBRUARY SPECIAL! The adoption fee has been reduced to $250!

Name:

Age:
9 (2003 estimated birthdate)
Gender:
Gelding
Species:
Horse
Breed:
Quarter Horse
Location:

Joe's Story:
ADOPTED!!! Joe came to us as a horse that was headed to Canada to be slaughtered. We do not normally have horses coming in from these situations but a volunteer stumbled across this group of horses so we decided to step in. That volunteer took the horses home to foster them. They where in much need of handling. Joe is a very stocky horse with a great personality. He is turning more and more into a lovebug everyday. His foster mom says he is improving quickly and is patiently awaiting his new home. Joe does need an experienced handler as he has been handled rough in the past and can get nervous. We have not ridden Joe as we have been working mainly on his ground manners at this time.

We would like to get Joe into a different foster home, so please fill out an application if you are interested. Joe's adoption fee is $500.

Name:
Julie
Age:
23 years (1989 birthdate)
Gender:
Mare
Species:
Horse
Breed:
Thoroughbred
Location:
S.H.A.R.E Sanctuary Horse
Julie's Story:
Because of her issues, Julie will live out her life at SHARE as a sanctuary horse. Julie is being sponsored by Cindy & Faith Dauber.

Julie is an off the track Thoroughbred. She is about 22 years old. She is about 16.2 hands and is bay in color. We found her in Kankakee with horrible wounds to her legs and she was so thin we did not think she would make the trip home. She spent 3 days at the veterinarian for her wounds. They had to inject antibiotics directly into the joint and she stood and let them. She must have known they were trying to help her. She is not sound because of her injuries and thus cannot be ridden. Julie is a sweet girl who has found some friends at her new home. Julie has been having a great time with her other horse friends. She can often be seen running with the herd out in the pastures. She has so much fun outside that it is no wonder that she is reluctant to enter her stall at night. This beautiful girl is doing great.

Name:
Kasey
Age:
21 (1991 birthdate)
Gender:
Mare
Species:
Horse
Breed:
Standardbred
Location:
S.H.A.R.E.
Kasey's Story:
Kasey is one of the Standardbreds that was rescued from slaughter from New Jersey. She's 20-years-old, and was a broodmare, and before that she raced as a trotter. She is sweet tempered and nicely mannered. She is being started under saddle and has been doing a wonderful job. She's been rode all over SHARE property and in the surrounding fields and she is a really good girl. She'll go through anything and doesn't do anything stupid or mean-spirited under saddle. She trots and canters easily and seems to enjoy riding around outside. She does get a little nervous in an arena but we think that's just showing her preference to be a laid back trail horse for someone.

For more info on Kasey, visit her Updates page.

Kasey's adoption fee is $500. FEBRUARY SPECIAL! The adoption fee has been reduced to $400!

Keno Reno's Story:
Keno Reno is one of our new horses straight from New Jersey. This big beautiful bay is over 16 hands and has a huge heart. An off the track Standardbred, she has been started under saddle and is doing wonderfully. She is a friendly horse who greets you in the pasture for attention and always tries to do her best. She's nicely built and a very attractive horse. Keno is suitable for light riding only as she has OCDs.

Name:

Breed:
Trakehner
Location:

Kera's Story:
Kera is a 13-year-old purebred Trakehner mare. She is due to foal in Spring '12. She's a beautiful mare with a very sweet and loving personality. She is good to be around, may need a refresher with her ground manners (many broodmares are loving, but a little pushy if they haven't been worked with regularly). We don't know about her soundness or ridability yet and won't be evaluating her until after she weans her baby which we believe will be early to mid Summer 2012. Both Kara and her weanling will be available for adoption at that time, but we welcome adoption applications and will put a hold on her for an approved application.

You can keep track of new photos, videos, and other progress on her updates page.

Name:

Breed:

Location:

Kiernan's Story:
ADOPTED!! Kieran is 2 year old Trakehner gelding who came from a breeder who just had too many horses. He is friendly and very sweet, but hasn't been halter broke yet. (We'll be working on it!) We do have his dam, Kera, who is staying at SHARE until she foals out and weans her foal this summer. Unfortunately besides having Kera here, we don't have any other info about his bloodlines other than that he is a Trakehner. Like the other Trakehners from this breeder, his good quality is pretty evident when you see him in person. (Sadly he's kind of messy and it's really too cold to give him a bath, so we'll be working on his coat. Believe it or not we did groom him before this photo shoot and even though we were definitely hurting him, he only turned to look but never offered to bite or kick.) Kieran will be gelded shortly and then will be available for adoption. He's sound, healthy, and very beautiful, and he should be sound for any discipline. He is about 14.2-15.0 hands high right now and not done growing. Here's a video of him from 12-21... Keep in mind the ground is just MUD. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E78-EfakSW0 His adoption fee is $800.

Gender:

Breed:
Belgian
Location:
SHARE - Sanctuary/adoption
Molly's Story:
Because of her issues (very expensive dietary needs and no more than light work), Molly is a considered a sanctuary horse and is welcomed to stay at SHARE for the rest of her life. We would like to find her a adoptive home, but any disruption to Molly's very specific feed and light work only requirement would set back Molly's recuperation by months, and because of this, adopting her is a huge commitment. If you are interested in adopting Molly, and are familiar with PSSM and have the ability to provide the expensive high fat feed and very high quality alfalfa that Molly will need for the rest of her life, please do contact us! Meanwhile, Molly is looking for a sponsor!

My name is Molly and if you hadn't noticed, I am a big girl. To get myself back into good shape, I have to gain some weight and regain the muscles in my back legs. I have a metabolic disorder that makes it difficult for me to eat like a normal horse. I require a high fat diet and lots of rich alfalfa hay. When I first came to SHARE, I could barely walk, I had lost so much weight and had a lot of muscle wasting on my back legs. As you can see I am doing much better. I have a huge heart and am very gentle despite my big size. I currently share a pasture with Tucker, a big Belgian like me. Keep checking in on me to see what I'm up to!

Penny's Story:
Penny is an 18 year old Rocky Mountain Horse who was adopted from us about 4 years ago. Unfortunately the adopter can no longer keep her so she is once again looking for her forever home. She came into our care in 2007 following a severe case of neglect that resulted in many dead horses and many close to death. We took in many of these horses which were either Missouri Fox Trotters or Rocky Mountain Horses. We still have a few left that are looking for homes like Sunny, Sunshine, and Shygirl. Penny can also be added to the list. These horses are extremely smart and willing to please. Penny loves to be groomed. We believe she is broke to ride but her adopted only had a saddle on her and no one had ridden her yet. She will need an experienced handler who can help get started again. She still has many more years ahead of her. So, if you are looking for a smooth riding horse look no further!

Prince's Story:
Prince is a 5 year old gelding. He came from the Toledo Ten rescue and was severely emaciated. (He is the black horse in the trailer--one of the worst.)

Update: 12/12/11--Prince is coming along very nicely. He has gained some much needed weight but still has a ways to go. He is starting to come around and is learning to trust people more and more every day. He is becoming easier to handle and is not trying to bolt every time he is lead. He has learned that he really enjoys to be groomed and he loves treats! He will make a great horse for someone very soon!

As of January, we have gelded Prince and he is recovering nicely. He is still very timid. We would love to have an experienced foster home (or equine professional willing to donate their time) to give him the one-on-one time he needs to turn around. Please fill out an adoption application whether you are interested in fostering or adopting Prince.

As of February, it takes a little bit of work to even approach him in a stall because he's so scared. We would love to get him into a foster home with an equine professional to continue working with him. He is very cute and well put together, so he will make someone a lovely horse once his issues are addressed.

Richela is a 15.0-15.1 hand bay TB gelding. He came to SHARE as a stud and was gelded. He will need a gentle, but firm hand. Richie has a very cute head and a nice trot, and we believe he'd be sound for any discipline.

As of December 2011, Richie is in the middle of his 2nd 30 day stint with a professional trainer. Mark Merrimen feels confident that he will have Richie started under saddle. Richie will still need an experienced horse person who is an intermediate to advanced rider.

You can keep track of new photos, videos, and other progress on his updates page.

Richela's adoption fee is $500. FEBRUARY SPECIAL! The adoption fee has been reduced to $400!

Sadie's Story:
Sadie is a 4 year old Welsh cross pony filly. She's 11 hands high and in good condition. She's adorable but was literally spoiled into having some behavior problems that resulted in her family no longer being able to keep her. She will need an experienced adopter. If there is someone experienced at bringing along spoiled ponies, we'd love to have a foster home that would put some training on her.

Shelby

Gender:

Species:
Horse
Breed:
Quarter Horse
Location:

Shelby's Story:
Shelby is a beautiful black quarter horse. She is around 15 hands tall and is built like a tank. She was broke to ride but has some issues under saddle. We do have someone working with her and she gets better all the time, but would require an experienced rider. We have video of her riding upon request--she's actually broke to w/t/c and has a good stop, but just has a lot of attitude at the beginning--and she has been extensively checked over by our vets, received chiro, massage, etc. and there is not a physical problem. She is fine to handle on the ground.

UPDATE!! Shelby is currently spending January 2012 at a trainer where she is learning respect. We are confidant she will be a nice riding horse when she comes back. Get your applications in now for this Black Beauty!!

Shygirl's Story:
Shygirl is a Missouri Foxtrotter who is looking for a home. She is good friends with Copper but they do not need to be adopted together. We believe Shygirl to be fully sound. We have had a saddle on her but she's kind of nervous about it, but there's no reason why someone couldn't finish her training and make her a riding horse. Unfortunately, she's been put on the back burner for training several times so we hope to find her an experienced volunteer to work with her or an experienced foster home who could complete her training. Shygirl is easy to handle on the ground and a sweet horse to be around.

Sierra's Story:
In July 2011, SHARE went back to the nurse mare farm with a local family who were willing to take on some nurse mares home to raise themselves. There we met Sierra, and the owner said she was going to go straight to slaughter because she was mean. Sierra bore the evidence--injuries on her forehead where she had been hit with a 2x4.

In reality, Sierra is sweet and a little bit shy. She really has had no training, so she has no manners, but she's definitely not a mean horse. She's pregnant and will be having a March 2012 baby. Most likely she will stay at SHARE to have her foal and then they'll be adopted out separately, but she is available for adoption now to a well-prepared home who can get her through foaling and raise her baby OK. A qualified foster homes would be appreciated too! Contact us if you think you can help. Her adoption fee is $500. She will not be available until after she foals and weans her baby.

Twiggy's Story:
Twiggy is a 2011 Nurse Mare orphan. You can read more about their story on their page. She came in with horrible urine burns and a fungal infection that had taken most of the hair on her face and some spots on her body as well. She was our youngest nurse mare foal and not one we'd planned on, but she clearly wasn't doing well and we couldn't leave her behind!

Twiggy's hair has grown in and she is a healthy and lovely young lady. She is used to lots of handling, is halter broke and will stand pretty good for the farrier.

Willow's Story:
ADOPTION PENDING!!! Willow is a 5 year old Egyptian Arabian. She was rescued very close to starvation. Another week and she would have died. She has great conformation, stands for the vet and farrier, and is green-broke to ride. She is a bay with a blaze and would make a great trail horse or open show horse, unfortunately we do not have papers on her. Willow is friendly and sweet and ready to go to a adoptive home or foster home that will put the miles on her and turn her into a riding horse. One of our wonderful volunteers has been riding Willow and she is doing great! She is actually on the lazy side. She does well both undersaddle and bareback in the arena and outside. She walks and jogs and is learning quickly how to steer, stop, and back.

All of the horses from this investigation are very sweet and friendly. We'd also like to find a foster home for him but as lovely as he is, we imagine he should be snapped up fairly quickly!

We have some additional photos of Zeus on his updates page. We also have video of him: Watch a video of this horse at liberty. Zeus in the mud
